Obituary

White River Junction, VT- Clifford Fay Johnson, 94, of White River Junction, died on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the White River Junction VA Medical Center.

Born on February 16, 1931, in Windsor, Vermont, he was the son of Ralph Gordon Johnson, Sr. and Ruth Celia (Bartlett) Johnson. Cliff grew up in Windsor and graduated with the Class of 1949. He began his career with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company shortly after graduation, working in both production and the shipping department.

In 1953, with the draft looming, Cliff enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his training at Fort Dix, NJ, and Aberdeen Proving Ground before being stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. There, he served in Ordnance Supply, eventually rising to the rank of Supply Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1955 and returned to Goodyear in Windsor.

Cliff led a long and meaningful life, grounded in service, hard work, and a strong moral compass. He was independent, deeply loyal, and lived with quiet integrity. If trust was broken, he chose not to confront—but to walk away, still steady in his purpose, like the sun continuing to shine.

He was a proud member of several community organizations including the Windsor Fire Department, Windsor Area JC's, Hartford Elks Lodge #1541, American Legion Post 26, and the former Windsor County Law Enforcement Association. He served as a constable in Hartland, VT, and helped police many community events—from the Hartland Fair and sportsman shows to local dances at Spot-O-Pines and Tink Reed's in West Bridgewater.

Cliff was devoted to his family. When his father became ill, he took on the responsibility of caring for him, lifting him in and out of bed and offering constant support. Later, he built a home for his mother near Johnson Road, so she could remain close to family and safe during Vermont's harsh winters.

On June 24, 1960, Cliff married the love of his life, Margaret "Peg" Macleay, in Windsor. Together, they raised three children: Andrew Clifford, Marcia Ann, and Ronald Edward. Cliff and Peg shared a love for dancing, earning ribbons at Hartland Old Home Days in 1973 and 1974, and following local dances throughout Vermont and New Hampshire. In later years, they enjoyed playing Bingo together.

When Peg's health declined, Cliff brought her home from a nursing facility and lovingly cared for her until her death—an act of devotion that defined the depth of his character.

Even after retiring from Goodyear, Cliff remained active. He worked at Aubuchon Hardware, clerked at Mark Pippin's Liquor Store, served as a courier for the Vermont Courier Company, and managed the 37-unit Rutland Motel & Coffee Shop. He and Peg eventually moved to Bradenton, Florida, where Cliff worked at Bob's Bargain Barn before health issues brought him back to Vermont to live with his daughter, Marcia.

Cliff was predeceased by his beloved wife Peg; his son, Andrew Clifford Johnson, his sister, Pauline Isabel; and brothers, Ralph Gordon Johnson, Jr., Alan Lawrence "Pete" Johnson, and Kenneth Earle Johnson.

He is survived by his children, Marcia Johnson Landon and her husband Kevin Ellis of Lebanon, NH, and Ronald Edward Johnson of Wilder, VT; grandsons, Branson William Landon and Bryce Steven Landon of White River Junction, VT; sisters-in-law, Edith Johnson of West Windsor and Jo-Anne Martell of Charlestown, NH.

A visitation will be held from 5-7PM on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction, VT. Condolences may expressed in an online guestbook found at www.knightfuneralhomes.com.
