North Thetford, VT- Charlotte Eva Durkee, 88, died Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at home, surrounded by her family.
Charlotte was born October 22, 1933, in White River Junction, VT, a daughter of Fred and Eva (Rule) Mace. She grew up in White River Junction as one of eleven children and graduated from the Hartford School on Bridge Street in 1951. Charlotte was married to Roy Durkee in her family's home in White River Junction on December 26, 1954. They lived for a time in South Strafford and later Union Village, VT. Together they built their home in White River Junction. She was a stay-at-home mother until her youngest started school. Charlotte worked at the Heel Factory in Wilder, VT for a few years and later Rich's Department Store in West Lebanon, NH until leaving in 1979 to care for her grandchildren at home during the day. In 1985 they moved to North Thetford where they have lived since.
Charlotte enjoyed cooking, camping, country music, and dancing. She enjoyed going to see her favorite country artist play live. And over the past few years watching "Her Cowboys" on TV to fill her days. But her greatest joy came from family, especially her grandchildren where she played an intricate role in the upbringing of her grandchildren. True joy came to her while gathering with family.
Charlotte is predeceased by three sisters, Audrey Hadlock, Frances Mosher, and Jesse Miles; brothers, Fred, Gordon, Chet, Arnold, Nathan, and Forest Mace.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Roy Durkee of North Thetford; three children, Cheryl Leavitt and her husband, Rick of Newport, NH, Eric Durkee and his wife, Karen of East Thetford, and Scott Durkee and his wife, Tina of North Thetford; three grandchildren, Aaron Jordan and his wife, Kelly of Grantham, NH, Jeremy Durkee and his wife, Stephanie of Windsor, VT and Kendra Durkee of White River Junction, VT; great-grandchildren , Mason and Mara Jordan, Eleanor "Ellie" and Brooklyn Durkee and William Lopez; a sister, Joyce Davis of Barnet, VT; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Bayada Hospice, especially her aide Carmen and case nurse Sarah, as well as the other aides and nurse staff that cared for her over the past month.
