Ascutney, Vermont – Charles H. "Chuck" Riley, 87, died Thursday evening, June 7, 2012 at the Cedar Hill Health Care Facility in Windsor, VT.
He was born July 21, 1924 in Newark, NJ the son of Alfred J. and Caroline (Koch) Riley. Chuck grew up in Glen Ridge, NJ and graduated from Glen Ridge High School. He was accepted and attended Trinity College in Hartford, CT before enlisting in the Army Air Corp and serving his country during World War II. After the war he returned to Trinity College and completed his degree. Upon his graduation he accepted a job with the Etna Fire and Casuality Insurance Company and started his long career as an insurance agent.
He was married to Merlyn E. Kelly August 7, 1948 in West Hartford, CT. He worked for a couple different insurance companies over the years retiring from AIG Insurance in the late 1980's. Chuck and his family lived in several different areas during his working career including, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, California and then finally, following his retirement, in Ascutney, Vermont. When Chuck wasn't working one of his favorite past times was fishing.
He was predeceased by a brother, Harold G. Riley and a sister, Dorothy Prentice. Chuck is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, three sons, Charles A. Riley of Windsor, CT, Lawrence F. Riley of Powell, OH, Thomas H. Riley of Green Valley AZ, six grandchildren, a brother, Gordon Riley of Littleton, CO, Rae Grimmig of Niceville, FL as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Monday, June 11, from 4-6PM at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, June 12th at 11 AM at the Ascutney Union Church. Burial will follow in the Ascutneyville Cemetery.
