IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Catherine "Cassie"
Paupst
April 27, 1941 – November 25, 2022
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine "Cassie" Paupst. Cassie was born on April 27, 1941 to John and Margaret Waterhouse in Schenectady, NY. After graduating from St. Joseph's Academy in Schenectady in 1958, Cassie joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, during which time she earned her Bachelor's from the College of Saint Rose and served as a schoolteacher in several Catholic schools. Upon leaving the convent in 1969 after 11 years of service, Cassie earned her Master's in Library Science from SUNY Albany. She loved her career as a school librarian and shared her deep love of books and reading with generations of young people.
Upon retirement, Cassie enjoyed traveling, book groups, and giving back to her community in a variety of ways. Although she had left the convent, she carried on a lifelong interest in and quest for spirituality. Following the death of her husband Ken, Cassie spent several happy years at the Shaker Pointe Retirement Community, where she received loving care from Sisters and laypeople alike. After her hometown of Schenectady, her second favorite place in the world was Sea Isle City, NJ, where she spent many happy childhood summers with her maternal grandmother's family.
She was predeceased by her sister Peg and husband Kenneth, and she is survived by her sister Marilyn, brother John, son Christian, daughter Kendra (James), grandchildren Nicholas and Elodie, and many lifelong friends from her high school graduating class, fellow Sisters of St. Joseph, colleagues from her teaching days, and from the many other communities of which she was a part over the course of her life.
Cassie radiated pure goodness, and everyone who knew her throughout her life commented on her bright smile and infectious laughter. May we all aspire to the kindness, generosity, and selflessness that Cassie embodied.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, June 19 at the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna, NY. Donations in Cassie's memory may be made to St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham, NY.
