WINDSOR, VT
Campbell D. Syme, 88, a resident of Windsor and formerly of Millburn, New Jersey passed away Thursday morning, June 24 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor.
He was born November 25, 1921 in Lochgelly, Scotland the son of Campbell Donaldson and Catherine Syme. He moved with his family to the United States in 1929. He received his schooling in East Orange, NJ where he graduated from East Orange High School in 1941. He attended and graduated from Newark College of Engineering. He married Marion Richards in Newark on November 21, 1942. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Philippines during World War II where he was in charge of the motor pool and served with the military police. Following his honorable discharge in 1946 he returned to East Orange. He and his wife later moved to Millburn, NJ where they had resided until moving to Windsor, VT in February of 2010.
Mr. Syme was employed at Monroe Calculator in Orange, NJ and assisted in the development of the UPC bar code system. He also worked as a consultant for several companies and worked on the development of fibro optics.
He enjoyed repairing antique clocks as well as building clocks. He was a member of F & AM Continental Lodge #190 in Millburn, NJ where he was a Master Mason for sixty four years and served as the Worshipful Master in 1980. Mrs. Syme passed away on May 23, 2010.
He was also predeceased by one brother, John Donaldson Syme, one sister, Jean Miles and one daughter in law, Sandra Syme.
Survivors include two sons, John D. Syme and his wife Marilyn of South Royalton, VT and Bruce C. Syme of Stow, Ohio, one daughter, Elizabeth Jean Syme of Windsor, VT, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 29 at 3:30 PM at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor with Pastor Jennifer Donaldson, officiating. Committal services will be held at the convenience of his family in the Hollywood Park Cemetery in Union, NJ.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Children Hospital at 12502 USF Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612-9411.
