Obituary

Windsor, VT- Calvin E. Monroe died on November 12, 2024, at the age of 100 in Windsor, VT. The son of Leon and Mildred Monroe, he grew up on his parents' small farm in Cornish, NH with six much older brothers and sisters.

Calvin graduated from Windsor High School in the class of 1942. Right after graduating, he enlisted in the Navy, serving aboard the Destroyer USS Mayrant during the war in the Mediterranean and the Pacific and on the Aircraft Carrier USS Leyte after the war on good-will missions to South America.

He was married to Freda Scales Monroe for 53 years, and they had three children together. After her death, he was married to Dora Yandow Poulin until her death 13 years later. He often expressed how grateful he was to have had two wonderful wives and to have acquired a large, loving step-family.

Calvin spent his career in the plumbing and machine tool industries, having worked for many years at Cone Automatic Machine Co., and subsequently at Windsor Machine Products. In his role as sales and service representative at Cones, he traveled widely in this country, Europe and Japan.

Calvin could build or repair almost anything, even if he had to invent and fabricate needed parts. He had immense patience and was a generous and loving son, husband, father, and sibling. He took great care of several of his sisters in their old age, as he did both of his wives and his son during their final illnesses. Although Calvin was not an overtly outgoing person, he made friends wherever he went, from factories in Japan to Frazer's Place in Windsor.

In addition to his wives, he was predeceased by three brothers, three sisters, and his son, Donald. He is survived by two daughters, Calveda Heslinga and Kathleen Rivers; two grandchildren, Janna Hickel and Ryan Heslinga (Amanda); four great grandchildren, Hannah, Carter, and Elizabeth Hickel, and Solomon Heslinga; nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his step-family, Stephanie and Norman Baird, Patty and Carl Mock, Linda and Carroll Rumrill, Theresa and Harry Dereniuk, Beth and Joe Poulin-Smith and their families.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Anyone who wishes to honor Calvin's memory may do so by donating to the Windsor High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund at PO Box 350, Windsor, VT 05089-0350.

Knight Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed in an online guestbook found at www.knightfuneralhomes.com
