Recognizing Calvin E. Knights 100th Year as a Native of Norwich, Vermont

Norwich, VT- Calvin Emery Knights died on May 4, 2023. He was 99. Cal was born August 18, 1923, in Norwich, VT, the son of Della (Wheeler) Knights and Roy Wallace Knights. His brother, Maurice Raymond (Tink) Knights, predeceased him.

Cal is survived by Joyce Huntington Knights, his wife of 73 years, two sons: Calvin Roy, his spouse Ellen (Engelsted), Peter Kenneth and two daughters: Pamela Huntington Knights, and Kimberly Knights Randall. He enjoyed eight grandchildren: Cullen John Knights, his spouse Sarah (Stein-Telemberg), and their two children, Sebastian and Elsa; Kristian Peter Knights, Jean-Luc Matecat, his spouse Lindsay (Taylor), Leah Elizabeth Randall, Jake Hunter Randall, Carly Anne Knights, Ashley Knights Cummings, her spouse Forrest, and MacKenzie Elizabeth Knights (deceased).

A lifelong resident of Norwich, Cal attended Norwich Grade School and graduated from Hanover High School in 1941. In 1943, he enlisted in the US Army and served as First Lieutenant in Ordnance during WWII in the Philippine Islands. He was discharged in 1947 and was in the US Army Reserve from 1950-1962. Having previously attended the University of Delaware and Columbia University, Cal continued his college education at Dartmouth, where he joined the Chi Phi Fraternity. He and a fraternity brother installed and ran the old Altow rope ski tow on the Hanover Golf Course hill across from Occum Pond.

Cal and Joyce married June 25, 1949, in New Rochelle, NY. While living in NY, he worked for Empire Coil Company and Ajax Enterprises as Manager of Sales. In 1956, he moved his family back to Norwich, taking time to help build their house. Cal joined Split Ball Bearing Inc. in Lebanon, NH, in 1956 becoming their Sales and Marketing Manager. In the 1980's, Cal purchased and developed a number of real estate properties in the local area. He purchased the Park Street Mobil Station which is now owned by the Hanover Coop.

Cal was a former member of the Norwich Lions Club and of the Upper Valley Development Council. He was a member for 50 plus years of the Blue Mt. Forest Association where he found peace in the outdoors and was at one with nature.

Always an avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, hockey, golf, horseback riding, water sports, and his devoted dogs. All were an important part of Cal's life. He loved sharing the joy of sports with his family and good friends. His children have followed in his footsteps, enjoying nature and sports activities as much as he did.
