Obituary

Ascutney, Vermont – Bruce F. Van Houten, 74, died in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 14, 2022, at his home in Ascutney, VT. Bruce was born October 31, 1947, in Geneva, NY the son of Lewis and Barbara (Mather) Van Houten.

He grew up in Seneca Falls, NY and graduated from Mynderse Academy in Seneca Falls, NY. After receiving his Bachelor's degree in education from Buffalo State College, he began his teaching career in Greece, NY. Bruce moved to the Upper Valley and taught at the Hartford High School for several years.

While holding down his teaching position, Bruce operated a small printing shop out of his basement. Eventually it had expanded into a full-time occupation, and he opened Van Houten Graphics running out of the basement of the Brownsville General Store. Business continued to grow and two years later, a second business, Windmill Copy Center was opened in Woodstock, VT.

At the young age of forty-one, Bruce sold the printing business and went back to school earning his certification as a radiographer. He took a position in the Radiology Department at Dartmouth Hitchcock, and it is here that he met his future wife, Barbara Domingue. They were married in 2001 and purchased a home in Ascutney, VT where they have resided ever since. He worked in the Radiology and IT departments at Mt. Ascutney Hospital for 10 years after leaving DHMC. He was most recently employed at Logic Co. in Lebanon, NH until his retirement.

Bruce enjoyed building model trains, remote controlled boats and most any kind of electrical projects. He was a handy man and spent many hours working on computers and doing IT work both at home and at work. He shared several hobbies with his wife Barbara. They were both licensed HAM radio operators and members of the Amateur Radio Relay League and Connecticut Valley Radio Club. Together they enjoyed camping at Lake Champagne Campground in Randolph, VT and at the family cottage on Piper Pond Lake in Maine.

He was an avid trap shooter and a member of the Precision Valley Trap Shooting Club.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Barbara Van Houten of Ascutney, VT, daughters, Rachel Donegan of Orford, NH, Kate Van Houten (Lloyd) of Braintree, VT, step-sons, Alan and Aaron Domingue, sister, Laura Teeter (Jeff) of Interlaken, NY, and five grandchildren.
