WINDSOR, VT
Bruce W. Stearns, 72, a longtime resident of Windsor, passed away Tuesday evening, January 14 at the Lebanon Center Genesis Healthcare in Lebanon surrounded by his family.
He was born September 9, 1941 in Windsor the son of Howard and Beverly (Tinker) Stearns. He received his schooling in Windsor and graduated from Windsor High School in 1959. He was a veteran of the US Navy stationed on the USS Wasp during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following his honorable discharge in 1964 he returned to Windsor. Bruce married Sandra Matheson in Berlin, VT on September 21, 1968. He was employed by the State of Vermont Department of Corrections as a correctional officer at the former Vermont State Prison in Windsor. He most recently had been employed by the Town of Windsor at the Windsor Fire Department for thirty nine years serving in various positions including twenty one years as Deputy Chief and five years as Chief. He also served with the Windsor Ambulance Service as an EMT.
He was a former member of the Windsor Elks Lodge #1665. He was fond of hunting and fishing. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Stearns of Windsor, one son, Steven Stearns and his wife, Rebecca of Windsor and one daughter, Carol White and her husband, Philip of Windsor, one sister, Nancy LaBounty and her husband, Lou of Hartford, VT, four grandchildren, Emma Saucier, Ryan Saucier, Katlyn White and Matheson Stearns, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Sunday evening, January 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. The funeral service will be held Monday, January 20 at 11:00 AM at the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church in Windsor. The Rev. Ken White will officiate. A reception for family and friends will follow at the Windsor Fire Department. Committal services with military honors will be held in the spring in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor.
