Obituary

NORWICH, VT
Bevalie Cone Pritchard, 96, a longtime resident of Norwich, died June 12, 2011 at Genesis Eldercare Lebanon Center in Lebanon, N.H.

She was born Oct. 4, 1914 in Boston, the daughter of Raymond and May Cone and grew up in Windsor, Vt. where she attended Windsor schools. In 1936 she graduated from Middlebury College with a degree in sociology.

After working in Wilmington, De. and Providence, R.I with the Girl Scouts, she married Dale B. Pritchard, a fellow Middlebury graduate, first living in Albany, N.Y. while he finished medical school and later in Ithaca, NY and New York City as Dr. Pritchard completed speciality training. During World War II, she returned to live in Windsor with her two sons until her husband returned from the Pacific theater. They then moved to Ithaca, N.Y. residing there until 1978. Upon her husband's semi-retirement, they settled in Norwich where she lived for the past 32 years.

Growing up in Vermont, she traveled extensively throughout the state with her parents and her grandparents, always recalling something that happened at just about every location in the upper valley during these family travels. This may explain her continuous interest in traveling both in North America and Europe.

While raising three active children, she found time to develop her interest in art by taking art courses at Cornell and later, working part-time in the art department in the School of Architecture. Golf , gardening and painting were interests that she loved when not serving in the Tompkins County Medical Auxiliary as president and in other official capacities. This service continued as a volunteer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital into her 90's.

For the past 30 years she was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Upper Valley where she was instrumental in establishment of the congregation. She served as president of the District Unitarian Universalist Womens Federation.

She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey and Alan, of Mystic Conn. and Falmouth, Mass. and a daughter, Pamela and her husband, Robert Orchard of Milton, Mass and grandchildren Christopher and Katherine Orchard.

A memorial service will be held Saturday June 25, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Upper Valley Meeting House in Norwich, Vt.

Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT assisted with the arrangements.
