Bertie C. Howland

West Burke, VT- Bertie C. Howland, 91, died Saturday Night June 5, 2010 at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in White River Jct., VT.

Bertie was born February 1, 1919 in Rochester, New Hampshire, a son of Raymond and Laura (Harriman) Howland. He attended the Lebanon Schools for a time before his family moved in with his step father Frank Smith in South Strafford where he continued his education. He then enlisted into the Army where he was stationed in the European Theatre in a Field Artillery Unit where he fought during WWII he was then reassigned to the Pacific Theatre where he finished out the war. He was married to the love of his life Evelyn M. Fountain December 7, 1942 in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Upon his return from service he went to work for a time at Millers Garage in White River Jct., where he reconditioned cars. He spent many years at the area woolen mills including Dewey's Mills in Quechee and in Hartford, the Baltic Woolen Mill in Enfield and Dorr Woolen Mill in Newport, NH. He then became a janitor at Dartmouth College in Hanover and retired in 1980 as the Lead Custodian.

Bertie was a proud Life Time Member of both the American Legion Post #26 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 2571 both in White River Jct., where he spent many happy days as a bar tender. He enjoyed spending time with his dogs Annie and Prince, he enjoyed farming raising Angus Holstein cross cattle, building and fixing up houses, and he was also an avid fisherman and gardener. But what he loved the most was getting together and spending time with his family.

Bertie is predeceased by a grandson Joseph Howland; three brothers, Clarence, Lawrence, and Earl; and a sister Ellen Lehman.

Bertie is survived by he beloved wife Evelyn M. Howland of West Burke, VT; a son Terry Howland of Newark, VT; two daughters Sandra Bergeron of West Hartford, VT and Donna Adams of Hartford, VT; five grandchildren, Scott Bergeron, Christian Bergeron, Jennifer Adams, Angela Howland, and Suzanne Libbey; five great-grandchildren, Cassandra Libbey, Heather Libbey, Isaac Bergeron, Kira Bergeron, and Ella Bergeron; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no services per Bertie's request Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., assisted with the arrangements.
