Windsor, Vermont- Bernard K. Clark, 83, died Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Wheelock Terrace in Hanover, NH.



Bernard was born July 3, 1934 in London, England, UK, a son of Stephen and Winifred (Beach) Clark. After high school at Epsom College in Southern England, Bernard entered the British Army where he served in the Intelligence Corps. Upon completion of his military service, Bernard attended Oxford University, Jesus College graduating in 1958 with a Master's Degree in Linguistics. He moved to Montreux, Switzerland to teach at Monte Rosa boarding school where he met the love of his life Margaret A. Paradine. They were married and remained for two years before leaving to Canada.


Bernard then took a teaching job at a boarding school on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada and they started a family in Mill Bay. There, Bernard learned to sail and to fish for salmon. He also studied at Simon Fraser University earning a Master's degree. In 1968 Bernard became a language professor teaching French, German and Russian as well as acting as Rugby coach at Norwich University in Northfield, VT. He later became a language professor teaching French and Russian at Mansfield State University in Mansfield, PA. While at Mansfield, he started a Russian exchange program with Volgograd University in Russia, spending two separate semesters in Russia. After a few years, he was appointed as Chairman of the Language Department at Mansfield and he stayed at Mansfield until retiring in 2000. Having enjoyed their time in Vermont he and Margaret chose to retire in Windsor in 2002.

Bernard loved to travel and enjoyed outdoor activities. He and Margaret traveled all over Europe and went on hikes and walks to explore new places. They toured many parts of the world. A few of their favorite trips were to the Galapagos Islands and New Zealand where Bernard enjoyed seeing the unusual wildlife, and to South Africa where they went on a safari. He also enjoyed the boat trips they took in Turkey, Russia, Germany and France and the car camping trips they took with the whole family all over the United States during summer vacations. Bernard loved outdoors activities and was an enthusiastic hiker, cross country skier, alpine skier, golfer and walker.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Clark of Windsor, VT; his daughter, Penelope Clark and husband Christopher Burden, and his grandson, Julian Burden of New York, NY; and his son, Adrian Clark and wife Shalushka and his grandsons, Cypress Clark and Liam Clark of North Vancouver, BC, Canada; and his brother, Anthony Clark and wife Penny Clark of Surrey, England.
