WINDSOR, VT
Barbara L. Newport, 93, a resident of Windsor and a former resident of Springfield, VT, passed away Saturday morning, February 24 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor.
She was born June 9, 1924 in Springfield the daughter of John and Lillian (McDonnell) Gurney. She received her schooling in Springfield and graduated from Springfield High School in 1942. She then attended Nursing School in Barre. She married Donald Clay in 1946 and they owned and operated a family farm in West Windsor. Mr. Clay passed away in 1950. She later married and divorced George Newport. She was employed at the White Acres Convalescent Home in Springfield for a number of years. Barbara enjoyed and took pride in her nursing career, was fond of knitting and sewing, loved listening to music and was an avid reader. Above all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
She was also predeceased by one son, Christopher Mauran, one daughter, Colleen Herold-Porter, three brothers, David Gurney, Donald Gurney and Gordon Gurney, and one sister, Priscilla Whitcomb.
Survivors include two sons, James English and George William Newport, and one daughter, Jacqueline Newport, five sisters, Joy Harvey, Carolyn Staubach, Harriet Abel, Nancy Moore and Laura Messier, one brother, John Gurney, six grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
At Mrs. Newport's request, there will be no public services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Historic Homes of Runnemede at 40 Maxwell Perkins Lane, Windsor, VT 05089 or to the Springfield Humane Society at 401 Skitchwaug Trail, Springfield, VT 05156.
The Knight Funeral Home in Windsor assisted with the arrangements.
