Barbara Waite Matteson, 94, of Brownsville, VT passed away peacefully at home on March 3, 2023.

Born in North Kingstown, RI, she was a daughter of the late William A. and Edith (Lynn) Waite.

Barbara always remembered her childhood fondly. Stories included those of being with her siblings playing outdoors, fishing, biking, making music, participating in church activities and taking the family boat – the Cozy – to Prudence Island each summer until the 1938 Hurricane landed the boat in a cornfield.

Barbara graduated from North Kingstown High School where she enjoyed participating in Band, cheer leading and various school clubs. She attended University of Rhode Island and graduated from the Katie Gibbs School in Providence, RI.

On a blind date just after WWII, she met the love of her life Elliot B. Matteson to whom she was married for 73 years. They moved to VT in the mid-fifties to work and raise their four children. She was the family cook, bottle washer and jitney driver. She enjoyed being the baseball scorekeeper, the volunteer church organist, and bowling and playing cards with friends. She was an avid Boston Bruins and Red Sox fan. Travel adventures with Elliot included visiting 49 states, Europe and Russia.

Barbara enjoyed going back to work after her children were in school and founded Matteson Real Estate in Brownsville. She 'retired' at age 80 but continued to be interested in the field and her business.

Her greatest joy came from being with her family. She was blessed with 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Each felt the light of her life.

She is predeceased by her son Elliot B. Matteson Jr. (Skip); her sisters Nancy W. Blydenburgh and Connie W. Sweck; her brother William (Bill) A. Waite and her granddaughter's husband, Matthew M. Zink.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Elliot B. Sr. of Brownsville, VT; two daughters, Linda Matteson of Thetford, VT, and Nancy Matteson and her husband, David Gross of Gloucester, MA, one son, William (Bill) Matteson and his wife, Wini of Bath, NH, and one daughter in law, Susan Matteson of Windsor, VT.  She also leaves her grandchildren and great- grandchildren:  Katie Willard, her husband Chad and their children Jack and Clare; Emily Matteson-Weld and her husband, David and their children Alden, Nolan and Millie; Molly Matteson and her children Matteson and Hannah; Sarah Zink and her children Cecilia and Michael; Kelly Gross and her husband Nic Fusi and their daughter Sterling; and Elliot W. Matteson; and Sadie Matteson.

Faith was core to the way she lived her life.  A beautiful, loving and comforting woman until the very end, rest in peace.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at Brownsville Methodist Church in West Windsor, VT at 2pm. A graveside service will be held at Amsden Cemetery at a later date.  A reception for family and friends will be held at Ascutney Outdoors in Brownsville, VT after the service.
