Barbara Mae Hazen, age 94, of West Hartford, VT, died suddenly on Friday, June 11, 2010, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Born in Hanover, NH, on September 8, 1915, she was the daughter of Edward and Lillian Clifford of Pomfret, VT, and the cherished wife of the late John Henry Hazen Sr., of West Hartford, VT. They shared a loving marriage of 73 years.
After completing her education at Millbrook Academy in Pomfret, she worked for several local families including the Hazens, and met her husband upon arriving at the Hazen homestead in 1932. She was married by Rev. George Buck, John's Uncle, at Buck Mansion, Crown Point, NY, on December 16, 1933. She gave years of devotion to the Hazen Dairy Farm, as the heart of the home and the bookkeeper. In addition, Barbara was an officer and a member of The Home Demonstration Club, a 4-H Club leader, a dedicated contributor within the West Hartford Community Center, and a member of three Parent Teacher Associations within the Hartford School System. She was a member of the Hurricane Riders Snowmobile Club. For ten years, she was the visionary, proud owner, and proprietor of The Olde Sugar House Shoppe. Most recently, Barbara was a member of Friends of the West Hartford Library and the Hartford Historical Society.
She was a loving mother to and is survived by a daughter, Alice Barbara and a son, John Jr., both of West Hartford; a son, David Francis and wife, Carolyn, of Pittsford; a grandson, Thomas Nathan Hazen and wife, Christy, of West Hartford; three granddaughters: Hannah Hazen Weeden and husband, Russell, of Saratoga Springs, NY; Gretchen Hazen Powers and husband, John, of Holliston, MA; Abigail Hazen Johnson and husband, Clayton, of Luneburg, MA; and six great grandchildren: Levi and Eric Hazen; Olivia and Amelia Weeden; Eamonn and Aine Powers.
She was predeceased by her husband in 2006; a son, Douglas Richard in 1967; brothers, Carlos, Gerald, and Donald Clifford; two sisters, Doris Roberts and Eva Clifford; a daughter-in-law, Rita Hazen.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 18, between the hours of 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Knight Funeral Homes & Crematory in White River Jct., VT. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 19, at 1 p.m. at the Greater Hartford Congregational Church, Hartford, VT, with the Rev. Janice Chilek officiating.
Interment will immediately follow in the West Hartford Cemetery in West Hartford. A celebration of her life will take place at the Hazen family homestead immediately following the burial. We hope all family and friends will attend the late luncheon in her honor.
