Union League 3 Cushion Billiards Champion Permanently Retires on Cue at 83
Arthur Silverang, 83, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York but who lived most of his life in Paramus, New Jersey before moving to the Hanover, New Hampshire area in 2004, died on February 18th of natural causes.  Arthur was widely known as a loving husband and father of 4, who accomplished great heights as a businessman, primarily in the garment and toy industries. He also owned his own liquor store in New York City for a time.  He was an executive at Robert Hall and Garan and founded his own toy manufacturing company in China in the 1980's.  He served in the army during the Korean War and became a drill sergeant prior to receiving an honorable discharge. As a Brooklyn "street" kid, he was a skilled salesman, negotiator and could hustle Minnesota Fats and Paul Newman in billiards, straight pool or nine ball.  Those skills paved the way for his admittance as the third Jewish American to ever be admitted to the New York Union League, where he won the Union League 3 cushion billiards title three years running from 1977 to 1980.  He is survived by Sandra, his loving wife of 61 years, his 4 children and their spouses, Kevin and Claudia Silverang, Karen and Keith Borgstrom, Keith and Ellu Silverang and Kim and Geo Kelly, and 8 grandchildren, Leigh, Ryan, Alex, Tuomas, Elena, Kelly, Sandra and Max.  Donations will be accepted in his name to the National Endowment for Alzheimer's Research or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.  His final resting place will be at the Pine Knoll Cemetery in Hanover, New Hampshire where he will become an honorary member of the Dartmouth community.
