Obituary
Ardis M. Close, 89, died Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Valley Terrace in Wilder, VT surrounded by her family.
She was born September 28, 1924 in Great Bend, KS, one of 4 children of Henry and Elsie (Brack) Moore. The Great Depression occurred during her childhood, and the family lived in several central Kansas towns before settling in Wichita in 1936. She graduated from North High School in Wichita, class of 1942. She attended Friends University in Wichita for 2 years, and graduated from Iowa State University, after which she took a job in Bennington, VT working for the UVM Extension program. During this time she was introduced to Thompson W. Close through mutual friends. She left for a time to pursue a Masters Degree in Home Economics at Michigan State University. She married Tom on May 18, 1952 and they made their home in Norwich. Though primarily a wife and mother, beginning about 1970 she worked as a part-time teacher of Home Economics at Mascoma Union High School in Enfield, NH and then the Hartford High School in Hartford, VT. During her life she was an active member of the Norwich Congregational Church, serving on many committees, and helping on church projects. She and several friends formed the Noon Neighbors program which continues to offer a monthly social gathering and meal for Norwich elders. She was a member of the Norwich Ladies Club, the Hanover Garden Club, and enjoyed the many intellectual and artistic offerings available in the Upper Valley. She will be remembered for her gracious and outgoing manner, her love of family and anything Kansas, her adventurous spirit, her love of cooking and music, her enjoyment of many kinds of hand crafts, and her gift for forging lifelong friendships that endured despite her struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
Her husband Thompson W. Close, predeceased her in 1989.
She is survived by two daughters, Elissa Close and husband Christopher Brady of Starksboro, VT; Ellen Close DesMeules, husband Peter and daughters Emily and Hadley of North Pomfret, VT, a son Stuart Close, his wife Kristin and children Greta and Bridger of Norwich.
A visitation will be held Thursday from 6-8PM at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11AM at the Norwich Congregational Church.
