Obituary

Lebanon, NH – A funeral service to commemorate the life of Ann Hutchinson Neidecker, who passed away at age 87 on Tuesday, April 21st at her home at the Woodlands in Lebanon, will be held at St. Denis Church in Hanover, New Hampshire on Saturday, April 25 at 1:00PM. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church hall. Ann was the daughter of Winifred Mackay Hutchinson and William Hutchinson of Portland Oregon; her father died of a brain tumor when Ann was 14 years old, and her mother remarried her stepfather, Professor Lucien Dean Pearson, professor of English Literature at Dartmouth College. Beginning in 1952, her parents resided in Cornish and Hanover, New Hampshire, and Ann and family made many trips to visit them here. Ann was born in Newport, Oregon and grew up in Agate Beach and Portland, Oregon. She attended Catlin High School and Smith College and spent her junior year in Puebla, Mexico. She met Anthony Barrett Neidecker of New York, New York while climbing Mt. Hood in Oregon, married and raised six children with him, residing all over the world, from Oregon, to Iowa, to Paris, France, to New Jersey and Saudi Arabia; with her family she traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East. Ann earned her Master's degree in French and PhD (ABD) in French Literature; she taught French at several universities. While residing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, one of her students was Moudi Khalid, the daughter of King Khalid. Ann's greatest joys included entertaining, gardening, studying a wide variety of subjects, and helping anyone and everyone in any way that she could; one of her most memorable adventures was driving across the United States in 1970 with her six children, camping in 36 states and hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Every summer she organized canoe trips, mountain climbing and camping adventures. While living in the U.S., she opened her home to many foreign exchange students from Germany and Japan, and took in a refugee family into her home from Vietnam. Every holiday, Ann always invited widows or lonely friends to join her lively family at the dinner table. She shaped the lives of her children and grandchildren to live their lives centered in the Christian faith, to reach out to those less fortunate and to appreciate nature. She is survived by her brother, Bill Hutchinson, her beloved husband, Anthony B. Neidecker, her six children and fourteen grandchildren. In her memory, she would be touched if you made financial donations to the Foyer of Charity, 74 Hollett St, Scituate, MA, 02066 to the attention of Father Matthew Bradley. The Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT is entrusted with the arrangements.
