West Hartford, Vermont – Alice B. Hazen, 89, a lifelong resident of West Hartford, VT, teacher, coach and friend, died Saturday afternoon, August 31, 2024, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.  Alice's death like all her life was "on her own terms".  She was born on June 23, 1935, in Hanover, NH to John Hazen Sr. and Barbara (Clifford) Hazen and grew up on the family farm where she lived until her passing.   Alice attended West Hartford Grammer school and Hartford High School graduating in 1953.  She continued her education at Lyndon State College in 1957, taught for a few years and went on to receive her advanced teaching degree from Ithaca College in 1965.  With a teaching degree in hand, she took a position with the Hartford school system and then taught, primarily in elementary school, for the next forty-five years.  When she retired in 1996, Alice, never missing a day of work, had accumulated enough "sick pay" to purchase a brand-new snowmobile and four-wheeler. That following year she went on a trip to Alaska with her brother David and his wife Carolyn.  For many years, Alice also coached the field hockey and softball teams.

She was extremely devoted to her parents.  Throughout most of her life she helped her dad in the garden raise vegetables that they sold to Dan & Whits General Store in Norwich, VT.  And in their later years, she took great pride in caring for them.   She was a member of the Hurricane Riders Club and the Friends of the West Hartford Library.

Alice was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Douglas R. Hazen and John H. Hazen, Jr.   She is survived by her brother, David F. Hazen and his wife Carolyn, of Pittsford, VT, her primary caregivers, nephew, Thomas Hazen and his wife, Christina of West Hartford, VT, nieces Hannah Weeden and her husband, Russell, Gretchen Powers and her husband, John, Abigail Johnston and her husband, Clayton as well as three great nephews, five great nieces and one great, great nephew due in November.

At her request a simple graveside service will be held Saturday, September 7, at 3PM in the West Hartford Cemetery in West Hartford, VT.  Memorial contributions may be made to either the Bugbee Senior Center, 262 North Main Street, White River Jct., VT 05001 or to the Friends of the West Hartford Library, 242 Carousel Court, White River Jct., VT 05001.
