St. Johnsbury, VT – Alexander Traverso, 85, died Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, VT.
He was born a son of the late Alexander and Ann (Meehan) Traverso in Boston, Massachusetts, December 13, 1925. He grew up in Dorchester, MA and graduated from the Boston Latin School. He served in the U.S. Army, during the Second World War as a Private First Class in A Company, 254th Inf. Reg., 63rd Div., and was awarded the Purple Heart. After returning from the war he attended Harvard College and earned his bachelor's degree as a member of the class of 1950. He served as a public welfare caseworker for over 20 years in Hingham, Quincy, and Weymouth, MA. Alexander was a long-time resident of Weymouth, MA and after his retirement lived for several years in St. Croix, USVI and Bonita Springs, FL before settling most recently in St. Johnsbury, VT.
He is survived by his daughters, Ann Traverso Moore, wife of Barry Moore, of Wheelock, VT, and Susan Traverso, wife of Kent Taylor, of Elizabethtown, PA; his five grandchildren, Ngodrup Sherpa, husband of Tsering Paldon, Roberta Susan Traverso/Estes, Andrew James Traverso/Estes, Linden Ann Taylor and Kent Alexander Taylor; great grand daughter, Kelden Tsering Sherpa; his brother, Edmund Traverso, husband of Jill, of Ipswich, MA.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years Ann (Nancy) Grimes Traverso and son, James Traverso.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held in Vermont in August.
