Windsor, Vermont – Aldis Lovell Dow, 93, died peacefully early Wednesday morning, September 9, 2020 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor, VT. She was born February 6, 1927 in Bellows Falls, Vermont the daughter of Leverett and Frances (Stockwell) Lovell.
Aldis graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1945 and went on to further her education at the University of Vermont and Lebanon, College. On August 16, 1947 she married Paul R. Lynch. They were later divorced. She married her second husband Harold Hayward Dow on November 19, 1960 in Norwich, VT and they made their home in White River Jct., VT.
In her earlier years, Aldis worked at the Brattleboro Retreat in Brattleboro, VT and then later at Holstein Friesian Assn also in Brattleboro, VT. She also worked for a time at the Fleming Museum at University of Vermont and then spent most of her career at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH where she worked as the Registrar of Freshman for over 33 years, retiring in 1991.
Aldis enjoyed volunteering as a reading aide at the Wilder Grammar School and for the Everybody Wins! Vermont, student mentoring program.
She was a member of the Norwich Congregational Church, the Sweet Adelines Barbershop Chorus, the Hartford Garden Friends, where she served as Secretary, President and Co-President, Aldis also belonged to the Hartford Historical Society, Hartford Historical Preservation Commission, and was a Charter member of the Green Mountain Civil War Round Table.
She enjoyed woodworking, crafts, gardening, nature, writing, her pets and especially being a grandmother.
She was predeceased by her husband who died June 13, 1976, a brother, L. Putnam Lovell, three sisters, Patience Lovell Burke, Anne Lovell (Wilson) Jackman, and Elisabeth Lovell Bowman.
Aldis is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Dow of Healdsburg, CA, son Christopher F. Dow of Vershire, VT, granddaughter, Amanda L. Dow and grandson Zachary C. Dow. As well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 13 at 1:30PM at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT. Burial will be held at a later date in the Christian Street Cemetery in White River Jct., VT. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hartford Garden Friends, P.O. Box 884 Wilder, VT
