Hartford, VT - Philippe H. Bouthillier, 71, died unexpectedly on Wednesday August 7th. He was born December 31, 1941 in Nashua, NH a son of George and Florence (Bergevin) Bouthillier. Phil attended schools in Nashua and at age 13 entered the Order of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Phil taught at Sacred Heart Schools in Woonsocket, RI and Lewiston, ME. After receiving his teaching degree from St. Michael's College in Burlington, VT in 1966, he moved to Hartford, VT and began teaching at Hartford High School. Later that year, on November 12th he was married to Mona Bechard and they have made their home in Hartford since. Phil, known to all of his students as “Mr. B” taught at Hartford for over forty-two years, most of those years a chemistry teacher, before retiring in 2008. Phil was passionate about hockey and in 1966 started the high school varsity hockey program at Hartford. In its early years he spent many cold nights flooding the tennis courts at the high school. He coached for ten years and officiated for fifteen years. In 1971, he introduced the youth hockey program in town and in 1979 designed the Hurricanes symbol used today. He was also instrumental in the building and operation of the BOR building, now the Wendell A. Barwood Arena that is now home to Hartford Hockey. In more recent years Phil has been active in the Hartford Girls Hockey Program. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Louise O’Neill and Claire Strickland. He is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Mona, of Hartford; three sons, Paul and his wife Karen of Albuquerque, NM, David and his wife Micki of White River Jct., and Gary and his wife Angie of Fort Worth, TX; eight grandchildren, Joshua, Bethany, Josiah, Timothy, Samuel, Hope, Brittany and Mary; a brother, Roger Bouthillier and his wife Donna of Hudson, NH as well as brothers and sisters in law, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Monday August 12th at 11AM.
