HARTLAND, VT Earl H. Coombs, 82, a longtime resident of Hartland, passed away Wednesday morning, April 18 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility in Windsor. He was born January 7, 1930 in Hartland the son of Clifford and Winifred (Davis) Coombs. He received his schooling in Hartland. He married Nancy Atkins in Hartland on June 1, 1949. Earl was employed as a machinist at the former Cone Blanchard Machine Tool Company in Windsor for several years and later at Netam Corporation in North Hartland. He was employed as a mason for Ivan Johnson in Woodstock and most recently worked for the Town of Hartland as foreman of the road crew until his retirement. Mr. Coombs was a member of the Hartland Volunteer Fire Department and also volunteered at the Hartland Roast Beef suppers. He enjoyed dancing and was a member of the Sugarhouse Swingers Square Dance Group in Woodstock, and a member of the Hartland Hill Hoppers Snowmobile Club. He had volunteered at the Hartland Recreational Center for many years and had done caretaking work for homes in Hartland. He was fond of riding his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle, enjoyed woodworking and small engine repair. Earl loved to be outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting, traveling and taking weekend trips to Island Pond with friends to snowmobile. He enjoyed music and playing his base fiddle, harmonica and trumpet. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Mrs. Coombs passed away on April 4, 2008. He was also predeceased by one brother, Stanley and two sisters, Madeline and Thelma. Survivors include three daughters, Janie White and her husband, Paul, Joanie Bjorkman and her husband, Kenny and Christine Courtemanche and her husband, Peter, all of Hartland, one son, Richard E. Coombs and his wife, Sue of East Stoneham, ME, eleven grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 23 at 1:00 PM at the First Congregational Church in Hartland, with the Rev. Lucia Jackson, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartland Village Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow back at the church hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Therapeutic Department at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility at 289 County Road, Windsor, VT 05089.
